And We're Off!

3:52 PM

It's official!

We've quit our jobs, cancelled our utility bills, and emptied out our apartment. Everything we own has been packed into four bags between us: two rolling suitcases to leave in the midwest and two 50 liter travel bags that we bring with. Plus one fluffy dog.

But we still have a few places to go to before we touch down in Milan: One weeklong whirlwind tour of friends in New York and then off to the midwest for a month of family bonding. Here's the specifics:

Since we decided to cancel our lease December 31st, but don't leave New York until January 8th, we had to get by with a little help from our friends. So far we've bounced around from Flatbush, to Hells Kitchen, to New Jersey and back into Brooklyn in Bed Stuy. We've slept on sectionals and in living rooms, climbed countless staircases and rode dozens of trains.

But don't let those numbers mislead you, we're so thankful for the wonderful people who've given us a place to stay for the night. We've met some amazing, helpful friends in our two years in New York and they won't soon be forgotten.

After this taste of the nomadic lifestyle, we're settling down in the midwest for a month. This thursday we fly back back, touching down in Minnesota on the 8th and then driving out to South Dakota on the 9th. For two weeks we'll cozy up with Zach's friends and family and try to forget we decided to come back for the coldest month of the year. Then it's a brief pit stop at my Grandpa and Grandma's house in New Ulm before we're off for a sunny family vacation with my parents and siblings in Cancun. We'll round out the home stay with a final week in Minnesota with my family before flying back to New York Feburary 8th.

In our final New York stay, Winry has one more vet appointment to make sure she's healthy enough to fly overseas and then we spend time with friends until our flight Feburary 11th. That morning's flight will take us into Canada for a layover, then finally on a red eye flight to Milan, Italy. If everything goes smoothly, all three of us will land on the 12th and be ready for our adventure.

For everyone who has given us the inspiration and support to help us begin our journey, we're so grateful. We can't wait to fill this blog with great stories of adventure and exploration. Look for those tales starting the 12th.

With love,
H W Z
